About the Author

Laura Fischer is a writer, editor, pet owner, and big sister from northeast Indiana. She wrote her first story before she knew the alphabet (just scribbles in a notebook, but she knew what it meant), and she’s been telling stories and writing them down ever since. Her favorite kinds of stories tend to be fantasy and science fiction, and as the oldest of eight kids, she’s also very fond of familial relationships portrayed in fiction, especially between siblings, or friends who become like siblings to each other.

She currently has two pet mice and a pet cat (no, they don’t get along), but in the past she’s had birds, rats, and even a snake. Laura also plays piano and sings, and enjoys meetings with geeky friends twice a week for role-playing and ridiculous board games. Last winter she helped with a production of A Little Princess as a stage manager and in a small speaking role, supporting two of her sisters who had larger parts in the play. Her YouTube channel hosts fanvids she’s edited, and she’s also written a few songs. Her drawing is terrible, though.

Laura’s book about her experiences with childhood abuse is now available on Amazon.com and for free here on this website. Her newest fiction novella, The Doctor’s Assistant, will be published serially at childrenofthewells.com starting in mid-July 2013. She is currently working on a new young adult science fiction series which will eventually be published with Dragon & Kettle, LLC, as well as new episodes of Cat by Night.

Cat by Night: Episode 2

CatbyNightcoverep2 Cat by Night: Episode 2 is now available on Kindle! Yes, it took a little longer than I was hoping. I got sick last week and had some other difficulties. But it’s done now, and I plan to release Episode 3 in September.

I will be giving away review copies of the first two episodes on Goodreads. You can follow me there to keep up to date on giveaways. Goodreads is a great website for connecting with fellow readers and finding new books to enjoy, and I hope you try it out.

Writing Update

I’m pleased to announce that the first draft of Cat by Night: Episode 2 is complete. I will be editing and polishing it over the next few days and will publish it to Kindle as soon as it’s ready. I set myself a deadline of August 7, and I think that’s completely doable. At this rate I should have Episode 3 out on August 28, and the next episode three weeks after that, and so on.

I have six episodes planned for Cat by Night, and I’m looking forward to sharing them with you all. The point of publishing this book as a serial was to be able to share the story as I was going along, hopefully receiving feedback and keeping readers excited with every segment. When enough episodes are ready, I’ll package them in a larger volume for easier consumption. Probably Eps 1-3 and 4-6 will get a package, and also 1-6 once the story is complete.

In Episode 2, we get to meet some new characters in Christina’s life–the girls she considers to be her friends at school, as well as a new boy who just transferred, who shows an interest in Christina that she doesn’t know how to deal with. Episode 2 also begins to reveal just what is going on with this magic stuff, and I’m excited about the plot developments there. I hope you will be too!

Would you like me to publish a sneak peek here on the blog before the book goes live? Let me know and I will try to get that up for you.

In the meantime, I’m also working on another project, Beasts of Paradise, a post-apocalyptic science fiction series that I’m very excited about. I’m about thirty thousand words into the project. Unlike Cat by Night, which I’m publishing as I write, I plan to finish the draft for the first book of Beasts of Paradise and edit it altogether to make sure it’s coherent and consistent. The world of Beasts of Paradise is much more complex and nuanced that most of my other projects, so I know it’s going to need a lot of work. I’ll definitely be talking about this project in future posts.

Thanks for reading! If you have twitter, you can follow my publishing company at @dragonandkettle to learn about new releases and special deals. My personal twitter, @maychorian, tends to be a bit clogged with my YouTube likes and comments, but my blog posts are also announced there, so you can follow me if you like.  I’m also working to put together a Facebook fan page where you can find news and announcements, if that’s more your speed, and of course you should keep reading the blog. Have a great day!

Cat by Night: Episode 1 — new Young Adult Urban Fantasy Serial

Hello, everyone! I’m excited to announce a new serial, Cat by Night. This story is about Christina, a teenage girl in the city who, for reasons that are not immediately clear, sometimes turns into a cat at night.

Cat by Night: Episode 1 (Young Adult Urban Fantasy Serial)

Christina never knows when it will happen. There’s no true rhyme or rhythm to it. It just…happens. Sometimes. And sometimes it doesn’t.

But when it does, she closes her eyes as a teenage girl, quiet, studious, socially awkward, and opens them as a beautiful black cat. The night is hers. She wanders where she wills, not knowing and not caring why she and she alone can live as a human by day and a cat by night.

Then, one night, Christina’s dual world is shattered. She runs into another cat, a stranger to her alley. He carries himself in a strange way, not quite like the other cats. And suddenly she realizes that he, too, walks in two bodies, human and cat.

And he just won’t leave her alone….”

I have six episodes for this serial outlined already. It might be possible for me to publish a new episode every few weeks, but we’ll how that goes, since I’m continuing to work that post-apocalyptic science fiction series I keep talking about.

In the meantime, hope you enjoy. Questions or comments? Leave them below, and please review the book! It helps me a lot.

Any Is Severely: A Story of Healing from Childhood Abuse now available

My personal memoir about my experiences with childhood sexual abuse is now available on Amazon.com. This book is relatively short, but it took me more than twenty years to write it. It means a great deal to me.

Any Is Severely (A Story of Healing from Childhood Abuse)

If you or someone you know has been abused, you can also download it for free here.

The summer I turned seven, I was molested by an eighteen-year-old boy. Through much of my adolescence and young adulthood, I did everything I could to convince myself that what had happened to me wasn’t that big of a deal, because many much worse things had happened to many other people. My experience and my pain wasn’t worth bothering about because it had been so mild in comparison. And in any case, I was over it now.

In my junior year of college, I fell into a very deep state of depression stemming from my memories of that summer. I was so low that I even thought about cutting myself or committing suicide, though I always dismissed those desires instantly. Finally, I mentioned to a friend that I was having a rough time, having trouble repressing old trauma. I said that I was molested, “But not severely.”

My friend broke through the shell I had built around myself with three words: “Any is severely.” The truth of that still rings. That night, I finally sought help for the first time.

In the years since then I have done a lot of healing. This book is my attempt to express my story in words, in the hope that it can be of help to someone else who felt or feels like I did, especially in that awful junior year when I struggled as hard as I could to repress my pain. If I can help even one person, I will consider myself blessed.
